Please Note:
We have recently had some reports from customers that are experiencing consecutive definition failures. We have resolved this issue in a recent definition update. In order to resolve this failure, please reboot your computer and then try to update the definitions.
If after a reboot you are still experiencing issues updating definitions, please try following the rest of this guide.
There are a couple of reasons why VIPRE may fail to update the definitions. Below are the various troubleshooting steps to take for this issue.
Manually download and apply the definitions
Some internet connections are less stable than others and can cause the definition package to be corrupted during the download. In this case, the definitions need to be downloaded manually to your PC:
- Click this link Download Latest Definitions and select the most recent definitions file
- Once the file is selected, you will be prompted to run or save the file, select Save As and select a location to save that you will be able to access later
Once the definitions are successfully downloaded to your PC desktop, follow the steps below to manually apply it to VIPRE:
- Open VIPRE
- Click Account > About VIPRE > Support Tools
- Scroll all the way down until you see Threat Definitions, click Load... button
- Navigate to where you downloaded the Definitions file, the file name should start with CSC39... and press Open button after. VIPRE will start applying the definitions.
- Once done applying, close the other windows that are open and go back to the main VIPRE interface. Updates should now say definitions are current
- If the Antivirus section shows a yellow arrow, click Turn On to enable Active Protection
The definition update interval is too infrequent
If you do not leave your computer on for extended periods of time, your update interval may be set to a setting that is too infrequent. VIPRE by default will automatically update definitions every 30 minutes. The update frequency can be changed to fit your computing needs. Click this link on How to change Definitions update frequency.
Keep in mind that whatever setting you choose will require the computer to be left on for the specified amount of time before VIPRE will check for an update. For example, VIPRE will not check for updates if the computer is left on for 1 hour and the update interval is set to check every 2 hours. You can remedy this by checking the option to "Check for definitions after startup." This will force VIPRE to check for a new definition update each time the computer is started or restarted.
Insufficient available hard drive space
The VIPRE definition process may fail if the drive that VIPRE is installed on does not have enough space. You will want to check that the hard drive has around 1GB of free space. This should provide enough available space for the definition update to be completed.
