What are the "New Network Location" messages I see?

From time to time, you may see a message indicating that a "New Network Location" has been found.

This message may appear between 2-6 times (on average) whenever you connect to a network.

 

If you were to click More Info on these messages, you'd likely see a few different items:

  • Network Adapter's name and an IPv4 address
  • Network Adapter's name and an IPv6 address
  • Loopback name and an IPv4 address of 127.0.0.1
  • Loopback name and an IPv6 address of fe80::

Note: A loopback address is a type of IP address that is used to test the communication of a Network Card and/or for testing network applications.

 

Since your Internet Service Provider's IPv4 and IPv6 addresses change from time to time (known as DCHP lease - the length of time will vary based on your Internet Service Provider and their router settings), it is necessary for the program to ask and confirm that each of these connections and IP addresses is safe.
